JKPB
Episode I: Set to Go

It was a time of political unrest and musical rebellion (ahem, 2004). Forged in the shadow of the nation’s rustbelt capital (Cleveland), the Jacknife Powerbombs spent years honing their ‘take no prisoners’ brand of rock ‘n roll.

And with dozens of sweat-soaked stages in their wake and a set of fifteen air-tight anthems under their collective belts, the time to record the debut album had finally arrived. The two-week session was not without turmoil, but ultimately, the lads persevered.

With a van full of gear and merch, the Jacknife Powerbombs set forth to spread their gospel to the masses…

If you are reading this, odds are you were there. But just in case, I’m going to do my best to offer a little context.

Full disclosure: it’s been a minute since I last listened to Set to Go. Anyone in a band will tell you that it’s hard not to hear ‘what could have been’ when listening back to your music.

That said, after all these years (nineteen and counting), these songs bring a smile to my face. I no longer hear the wrong notes or rushed takes. Instead…

I hear the endless hours in the practice space.

I hear the never-ending energy.

I hear Caesar barking like a man possessed in the vocal booth at one a.m.

I hear Doug playing through half the album in a single take (yes, really).

I hear Max and Mark plowing through their parts with ruthless efficiency.

I hear the sound of a band trying (in vain) to capture just how ‘big’ they sound on stage.

I hear the engineer saying, “Pretty good–do it again.”

Like I said, if you were there, then you already know. But if you’re stumbling upon this album for the first time or merely taking a stroll down memory lane, thank you.

about

Jacknife Powerbombs Cleveland, Ohio

Set and shaped in Cleveland, Ohio, Jacknife Powerbombs are inspired by the rustbelt cities and hard working life we’ve grown up in. Our explosive sound is equal parts Black Flag and Motorhead, but the echoes of frustrations, triumphs, and cheap adventures are all our own. Each song is ingrained with desperate, kinetic energy and the most raucous of rhythms, solos, buildups and breakdowns. ... more
